Industry experts place their bets on the supermarket of the future

A fascinating read, but this line definitely stuck out: "Imagine instead merchandising in the style of an Apple store: one pristine sample item on display that can be scanned and instantaneously fulfilled from a chilled subterranean stockroom."

Picking produce yourself is often cited as the primary reason to visit the grocery store rather than order grocery delivery, so I'm not sure how realistic this is for fresh items. That said, it makes perfect sense for city shoppers - A Whole Foods could be more of a showroom, occupying a significantly smaller footprint.
