I am looking into various cookware for my new induction cooktop (have a separate thread for that), but the decision on sizing for various pots and pans should be determined by the coil size. The problem is, I'm not entirely sure how the coil sizes and sensors interact for heating, and I cannot get answers from calling customer service.
I own a budget Frigidaire Gallery 30" induction cooktop (model# FGIC3066TB)
From my conversation with Frigidaire, it seems my coil sizes are:
right front element: 7"
left front element: 7"
rear left element: 6"
center rear: 10"
The coils apparently auto reduce if smaller pans are placed on them, but they take steps. For example, the 10" coil steps down to 8", and then 6".
What's unclear to me is how the heating coil works with the various sensor markers and how I best utilize that sizing for my cookware sizing decisions.
For that same example, that 10" center element actually has markers out to 11.5" (12" if you count the outer black ring), which I'm told are the sensor markers the cooktop uses to determine the pan size, and if the pan does not reach a particular sensor, it steps down.
That would seem to indicate to me that a 10" pan placed on it will not actually heat to the outer edge of the pan? That would be unfortunate, because it would mean that any pan placed on it would only heat to to 1-2 inches less in diameter than the pan, as the sensor would need to be the next step up. I rationalize this based on the fact that there are sensor markers beyond the actual coils size on every element. Why would you need a sensor to 11.5 inches if the coil only heats to 10"?
Does anyone have insight on how the sensors interact with the heating coils and if there is a way to properly purchase pans the best utilize heating to the perimeter of the pan?
