Rumah Makan Gloria (or Gloria Eating House) is hands-down one of the most popular dining spots in Malang town. Besides a "Hot Cwie Mie" chain with outlets in popular malls, Gloria also included a large catering arm which handles wedding functions and company events.
Gloria's main restaurant in downtown Malang started in 1985, after the current proprietress Ibu Siany Dewi left her business partnership with Cwie Mie Sawahan, another popular noodle eatery which started operating 2 decades earlier.
What we had today:P
- Cwie Mie Spesial - which is the house speciality of springy egg noodles smothered with minced chicken and an intensely flavored chicken broth, sprinkled with shallots, and served with poached wantons and braised chicken livers/gizzards. It was a simple, tasty dish - a bit on the salty side, as expected of typical Malang cooking, I'm beginning to notice.
- Nasi Goreng Kepiting - crabmeat fried rice, which also came studded with fresh shrimps, eggs and (yellowed) canned peas. I thought it could do with a bit more garlic or onions, though the texture of the rice was perfect.
- Nasi Goreng - traditional Indonesian-style fried rice, flavored with "kicap manis" (sweet dark soysauce) and "kicap tomat" (tomato ketchup), lending the rice a reddish hue. Only eggs and shrimps were added to the fried rice, unlike the touristy version which usually included satay, fried chicken and shrimp crackers (krupuk) on the side.
- Dessert was Es Alpukat Mocca - Flavored shaved ice with fresh avocado and cocoa sauce. Refreshing but sweet.
Very convenient spot for a quick meal - a typical Malang Chinese-Indonesian restaurant.
