Indonesia - Where "Es Tawon" got its name from ...

Es Tawon, a little stall serving flavored shaved ice here is more than 56 years. In local Javanese language, "tawon" refers to bees. The reason being that, when the shaved ice stall first opened in 1955, it was located beneath a huge tree with a large bee-hive. The bees would swarm around the stall's syrup-pot, filled with clear syrup made from local Javanese sugar ("gula Jawa"), but never would any of the stall's customers be stung by the bees. Hence, the stall obtained its name "Es Tawon" (or "Bees' Ice").

Amongst its sweet offerings were:

- Es Kacang Ijo - shaved ice with mung beans

- Es Kacang Ijo Alpukat - shaved ice with mung beans & avocado puree

- Es Kacang Ijo Tape - shaved ice with mung beans & fermented tapioca

- Es Kacang Ijo Ketan Hitam - shaved ice with ming beans & black glutinous rice

- Es Campur - the woiks!

Of course, we went for the Es Campur - it was delightful: fragrantly sweet, with nuggets of jelly, beans and alcoholic "tape" (fermented tapioca).

BTW, the big tree outside was now long-gone - chopped down in a road-widening project and, with it ,went the bee-hive which gave the stall its name. But lucky for us dessert-lovers, Es Tawon lives on, to continue dispensing its shaved ice desserts as it had done for more than half a century :-)
