This little place has to serve the best-tasting crabmeat fried rice east of Jakarta!! It offers 2 varieties of fried rice - the "usual" Chinese-style fried rice, and the local type which came tinged an alarming reddish hue (I don't think the color's from tomato sauce, but more likely red food coloring). The very spartan-looking but extremely popular eatery is Chinese-Indonesian-owned, and the food here had a distinct Cantonese slant - "foo yong hai" (crabmeat omelette) and crabmeat soup were also on the menu, though I skipped these for fear of crustacean overload.
Back to the crabmeat fried rice: it was incredible. I chose to try the "local", i.e. red version. Each grain of the fried rice had the perfect texture, gently flavored with eggs, shallots & a bit of oil, with nuggets of lump crabmeat. The indelible "wok-hei" aroma infused throughout.
A portion of crabmeat fried rice (IDR40,000 or US$4.50) is enough to serve 2 persons. A little saucer of pickled cucumbers and hot chilli peppers complete the picture. This is the best spot for a quick dinner if you're in Malang town (south of Surabaya).
Depot 74 is situated at the traditional market place called Oro-oro Dowo. A MacDonalds outlet is conspicuously and incongruously just round the corner, near Avia (a popular local grocery famous for Chinese-style meat floss).
