Indian Peaches, unusual variety.

Anybody familiar with this type of peach? I came across it today in a local fruit market and it's really unusual looking. It looks like a russeted apple but in streaks, almost stripes, over what looks like a reddish-peachy coloured skin. The "fuzz" on it is really heavy. The sticker says product of California.

I did a google on the name but only came up with lots of references to what sounds like a plum that is native to the southern States. This is definitely not a plum.

They're not ripe enough to eat yet, I figure about 2 days ripening time.

Anybody know anything about how long these peaches have been marketed? Why they're called "Indian Peaches"? What they taste like? Are they common in other areas? First time I've seen them.
