Indian Chinese, a proliferation in Jackson Heights

Eric Eto | Apr 12, 2005 12:56 AM

Spurred by the recent thread about Tangra Masala and Indian Oasis, I've been wanting to check out the new Indian Chinese places popping up around Jackson Heights. There are at least three new(ish) Indian Chinese places around 37th Ave. There's Desi-Chinese Mixed Masala (near 72nd St), Halal Chinese and Halal Desi (near 73rd), and the New Grameen (near 75th). This is in addition to the ones that have been around for a while.

Of the three, the New Grameen seems the most inviting. This former Bengali joint is now featuring Indian Chinese with some Nepali dishes. Desi-Chinese Mixed Masala also looks somewhat inviting, but I passed this place up since I dislike being the only one dining in a new place. I did make stop in at Halal Chinese & Halal Desi just to try the chili chicken and gobi manchurian. This place was opened by the people of Kabab King Restaurant. Just from this one visit, sampling only a couple items, I thought it shows some promise. I made the mistake of not requesting the chili chicken dry. The dry gobi manchurian was quite well spiced but well balanced with ginger and cilantro, although perhaps a bit over-battered. Not ready to make a verdict on this place without sampling some more.

So, who's been to any of these places? Anything to report yet?
