Indian in Bakersfield -- who knew?!?

During a recent road trip, my partner & I found ourselves in Bakersfield for supper. We pulled off the freeway into one of the many strip mall zones and resigned ourselves to a chain restaurant meal at Marie Callendars or the like. But, at the last minute, I found a non-descript Indian restaurant, Maharaja, at the end of a strip mall containing a Mervyn's. We decided to give it a go and were more than pleasantly surprised. The chicken tikka masala was complex and creamy with a rich tomato sauce and perfectly cooked chicken chunks. The aloo gobi was the best I've ever had, with an exceptional blend of spices, cooked to the perfectly balanced state of tenderness without mushiness. I also loved the aloo saag, very well spiced and not too greasy. Overall, I'd say Maharaja serves very good Indian food by Bay Area standards, and certainly the best I could have possibly hoped for in Bakersfield. Make a note for your next southbound road trip (we even returned at the end of the trip and found it just as good).
