Indian in Artesia - thanks! (long)

Will Owen | Aug 29, 200501:42 PM

I'd like to thank everyone who sent a recommendation, even though we didn't really follow any of them... Woodlands and Ambala Dhaba were suggested here, and our Indian-loving posse member Peter urged us to try Surati. We did go into Surati, but it's counter service only, and we found the huge menu both overwhelming and insufficiently varied for three novices, so we took copies of the take-out menu and wandered off down the street. When we came to a place called Ashoka, the buffet smelled really good and there were lots of Subcontinental folks eating happily, so we went for it. My wife stuck with water, but the Other Woman and I split a big bottle of very nice Indian beer. The buffet items were being replenished often enough to stay fresh, and they were mostly quite good, though the tandoori chicken was a bit dry and salty. The goat curry was tasty enough to warrant seconds, as was a dish whose name I did not get but it looked like school-cafeteria mixed vegetables and tasted like very spicy heaven. The rice was very good and fluffy - there was a young Asian couple whom we'd seen in Surati and then came in here shortly after we did, and they kept going back for plates of just the rice.

All in all, even though this was probably not the best joint in town it was perfectly satisfactory. We did walk up the street and got two bowls of culfi at Ambala Dhaba. I think our next visit to this area is gonna have to include sampling that chicken they're supposed to be so good at, plus whatever else they can scare up for us...
