I've heard so much about Artesia's Little India so I decided to make the trek up there to check it out for myself.
I went to a few different places to try dishes that were recommended to me.
First we stopped at "Jay Bharat" and ordered dhoklahs. Little chickpea spongecake looking things with a cilantro dipping sauce. We ordered a Masala Dosa, which was good, but I think could have been better. The sauce it came with was a thick yogurty type sauce that was very ordinary. I also tried a chuki (pardon if the spelling is incorrect) shake. That was DELICIOUS.
Next we headed to "Ambala Sweets" for jalabi. Perfectly crispy little treats with a honey syrup inside. Excellent. The man at the counter was so sweet he gave them to me for free because I had only wanted to try a few, and normally people buy them in bulk. He also recommended a dish called Papri Chaat- which was like an Indian version of nachoes! Panipuri chips topped with garbanzo beans, a thin yogurt sauce, chopped onions, lots of spices, and two very fragrant red and green sauces. EXCELLENT.
We also tried some of the other traditional sweets but I must admit they weren't to my liking at all.
I'd love to try more of the shops and restaurants for new dishes. Any recommendations for places AND particular dishes to try are greatly appreciated.
