If you live in Lefferts Gardens, stop by India Place on Vanderbilt and add their menu to your world's smallest delivery menu drawer/box/folder. They deliver to the area! At least they delivered to me (Lincoln and Flatbush) the other night (Friday, when it was pouring). The food was okay, certainly not great, but it wasn't West Indian, unspeakably poor Chinese, or from a fast food chain and I didn't have to go and pick it up, so they had a little leeway in terms of quality.
We had mixed pakoras, saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, lamb jalfrezi, paratha, naan, and a complimentary dessert (firni). Mixed pakoras were decent and the order was generous. Saag paneer was just awful - so bland and dull. A shame because the paneer they used was very good. Chicken tikka masala was quite good. Lamb jalfrezi was the best - first of all it was nice to see this dish, which is ubiquitous in the UK but not seen so often in NYC (similarly, they also had dhansak on the menu); secondly; it was tasty - the lamb was a tiny bit dry but the sauce was very good, rich and thick with a decent bit of spice. We did not request any specific spice levels (having had too many bad experiences with cheap indian places simply throwing a bunch of chilli powder into a dish, leaving you with a burning tongue and a dish of zero complexity). Paratha was very good, naan pretty poor. The complimentary firni was not good but can't really crab over a complimentary dessert.
The delivery situation is so dire in Lefferts Gardens that this mediocre meal tasted like ambrosia to me. The prices at India Place are very fair, so I will copntinue to experiment a little. For now I am thrilled to add them to my menu drawer alongside Vegetarian Palate, Sushi Tatsu, Yen Yen, Tex-Mex Fiesta, and Gino's Pizza (see, told you it was dire).
