Important Sovalo Update

We went to Sovalo with a group last evening. After we were seated we started unpacking our wine. The server came to the table and informed us that the restaurant was NOT BYO!
Then the hostess arrived and after some discussion about the confusion said that they were byo initially while they were waiting for the license to arrive and now are only byo on Mondays. However, she graciously allowed us to have the wines we brought.
Personally I think that they should have corrected the misinformation on chowhound since they were not surprised when I mentioned that it had been posted on chowhound.

Now to the food.... The bread was sourdough and olive served with a bean spread. Very good. The olives served were large green ones that had been marinated in something lemon, perhaps Lemoncello. Fabulous!

For apps we shared the ravioli, gnocchi and the crescent shaped pasta with veal cheeks. All were terrific. The only negative was the mussels which tasted "off". For the pastas we chose the "full" portion rather than the app size. They averaged about $14.

For entrees we had the mahi mahi over artichokes and potatoes, the bass (or snapper don't remember) over portobello, the chicken wrapped in proscuitto and the short ribs over polenta. The sea bass was truly outstanding. The entrees averaged $20.

For dessert we had the pear tart with ice cream and caramel sauce (which had to be homemade). This was very good except that the pear was a tad undercooked. A friend had the hot chocolate with biscotti which she loved. Also we had the flourless chocolate tart. It was a sizeable portion and disappeared before I could get a bite.

The service was excellent and very cordial. We had to ask for knives for our entrees and desserts as well as serving spoons for appetizers that they knew were were sharing but that is only a minor ding.

Be aware that there are only a few choices (4-5) for each course. That doesn't bother me since it allows them to do a few things well but others might find it a negative.

The atmosphere was lovely and the noise level was tolerable. We will return.
