Illuminati and what else is in Abruzzo?

StephP | May 30, 2008 12:01 PM

I haven't tried lots of producers from Abruzzo, only Il Feuduccio and almost everything from Illuminati except their Cerasuola (a rose from Montepulciano grape). In retrospect, I wish I'd picked up the Cerasuola instead of their Costalupo (100% trebbiano). Any recommendations for the Abruzzo/Marche area that you like more than Illuminati?

Thoughts below:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Illuminati Brut” Méthode Champenoise vintage. $39
(light white flowers, honey, pale orange candies, No fizz in 5 min, 100% trebbiano) Very pretty even without bubbles.

Controguerra Bianco D.O.C. Costalupo. $16
I'd pass. It's a more plastic smelling version of the sparkling. Trebbiano with Passerina and Chardonnay in it.

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane DOCG Zanna Riserva 1988 $71
mushrooms/truffle, the favorites of the tasting

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane DOCG Zanna Riserva 2003 $41
good on opening, but better 3 hours later. the favorites of the tasting

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo D.O.C. Ilico. $20
i'd pass. soy-ish. probably go for the il feuduccio at the same price point.

Controguerra D.O.C. Nicò Passito Nicò $49
mint, mint chocolate chip, coconut. some residual sugar but not like a dessert wine, more viscous.
