Il Portico in Tappan was only okay and nothing special

Tonight we celebrated my husband's 50th birthday with a family dinner at Il Portico. We originally had 6:30 reservations for 3, then my parent's decided to join us. When we called to change the reservation from 3 to 5, they said we should move our time up to 6. 6 is really early to eat unless you have small children or are senior citizens, but we said fine. When we arrived at 6 we were the only customers there! It wasn't like they were mobbed, so we realized that they moved our time up so that they could squeeze in another table seating at our table. By the time it was 6:30 they only had 3 full tables! I wish they had let us keep our original 6:30 time. It was awkward being the first customers.

Now to the food. The appetizer of stacked mozzarella, tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, tasted good, but the tomatoes were still not quite there yet. They were mushy and tasteless. The 6 stuffed clams were good and we enjoyed them.

For dinner, my husband ordered fillet mignon cooked medium. It came raw, or "very rare". He sent it back, and now had to sit there while we all began eating. The chicken parm was pounded thin, but not crispy enough, and bland. The sauce didn't have any kick to it. Some fresh herb like basil or even parsley would've been a nice addition. We had to ask for water and bread. No one asked if we wanted more coffee. A man at the next table also ordered chicken parm, and my dad noticed that he had a side dish of pasta with sauce, which we would've liked too. Our chicken parm came with a few string beans and 3 cubes of roasted potatoes, which that man also had. So in all probability he ordered and paid for a side of pasta, but no one asked us. We would've ordered that too. When my husband's fillet arrived, this time part was medium, and part was still rare. So my husband ate the medium part and asked for the rare part to be packed to go home. He'll recook it tomorrow.

In contrast, my birthday was a few months earlier, and we went to the nearby 1776 House. We loved everything, the food, the service, everything. We didn't feel like they wanted us out so they could get another seating at our table.

So we can only give Il Portico 3 stars out of 5, whereas we gave 1776 House 5 stars!
