Went to Il Grano for dinner before bridge at the club across the street last night.
Arrived about ten minutes before 6 and had brought some reading material in case my friend wasn't also early. The light is so low in this place that you need more candles than Liberace even just to read the menu. Asked them no fewer than three times to turn the lights up and if anything they turned them down.
What is the thinking??? It's not exactly a beautiful, romantic atmosphere right there on Santa Monica.
Prices are VERY high on everything. There are no appetizers under $13. Entrees are mostly $25 and up for relatively simple dishes. I just ordered the "crudo" SIV went on and on about -- BOOOOOOOOOORING! Just literally half a dozen bite size pieces of fish, like you'd get at the fish market. No nothing. Friend ordered the mushroom pasta, which was fine. We asked them to make us just a little green salad, which consisted of maybe ten bites of lettuce and shaved carrots. They charged us _$12_ each for these. The bill was over $70 without tip for enough food to fill a cavity. We would NEVER go back.
