Il Covo dell"Est-Review

I was intrigued by this restaurant for having a reputation as being a "neighborhood" restaurant. My hope was it would be along the lines of Le Zie or Da Andrea, 2 chowhound favorites with the same type of reputation that serve great food. Unfortunately after having dinner there last night, I can not put it in the same class. Some feedback:

Ambience/Service: Very nice size reataurant with a casual and comfortable feel. It was nice to not eat in a shoebox again. They also have a good size bar.Our waiter was extremely nice and helpful with a great sense of humor but he disappeared for long stretches.I have noticed this a lot lately where the waiter/waitress is very good but they are missing in action. Hope it is just me and not a trend.

Food: Well, lets just say that I would go again if I was in the immediate area and with a larger group. One of the things that attracted me to La Cove is that they serve a few dishes in butter sauce, a sometimes craving and vice.We started with a few appetizers including an unmemorable caprese, and gnudi, balls of spinich and ricotta cheese served in a butter and sage sauce. That was very good.Unfortunately,we ordered the chicken croqueetes served in a gorgonzolo cheese sauce. This bordered on insulting. The croquettes, which were not even warm on the inside tasted, tasted like they came right out of the freezer. They were deep fried and a step below a freezer entree. To make things worse the gorgonzolo cheese had NO taste at all. Bland would be an understatement.Bland gorgonzolo is something I have not experienced before. For my main meal I ordered the homemade meat tortellini in a butter and sage sauce. It was very good with a nice subtle spice to it.The portion size was a little small but the dish was very good.My wife ordered the pasta with shrimp and asparagus. She said it was bland and had no special flavor to it and ended up eating only half.Portion size was good. We skipped dessert since we usually only order it to finish off a great meal, which this was not.

In fairness, we may have had our expectations too high on this. The food was good enough overall, and I would probably go again if I was in that immediate area, but I would not go out of my way.I did, however, love the liveliness of the restaurant. It was buzzing pretty early.
