Ikinaristeak standing only

foodwhisperer | Apr 14, 2017 09:32 PM

I searched but didn't find a Chowhound review on Ikinaristeak restaurant. ( although I thought I had read some), my search skills are not the best,
I read some bad reviews elsewhere , people compared it to Tad's,,, but I think several of the comments were from people who just assumed things and hadn't eaten there.
The wait is long. So basically you stand in line for an hour ( they tell you 30 minutes but it is double whatever they tell you) . Then you stand again to order and eat your food. Yet the place packs them in. I am convinced people in NYC like to suffer.
So once you get your spot at a small counter, stocked with silverware, dressings, sauces, and even wasabi. You order your beverage ( wine, beer, soda, water) and then sides. The peppered garlic rice was a good side. There is a choice of two salads, and you can get white rice, corn, broccoli, potato, or green beans.
Then you go to the counter and order your steak from the "butcher". You have a choice of ribeye, sirloin, filet or mixed. They charge by the gram and they ask you how many grams you want. 350 was about the perfect weight.
I had the ribeye, and tasted the sirloin. They prefer to serve the meat rare and that is perfect. It is served on a hot black iron plate and you can cook it further if you want. They will prepare it anyway you want though.
The trimmings of meat get saved for the "mixed" steak orders.
The steak is served with some corn and some garlic chips on top.
The steak is tender, flavorful, and far better than I had expected.
The ribeye is fattier than the sirloin but both are good.
It is unfair to compare it to a Peter Luger or Wolfgang etc. It is not even close to that league. It is also unfair to compare it to Tad's or Outback etc , it is far better than those. Everyone I was with and those nearby all enjoyed their steak and left not a morsel.
I would go back, but on an off hour. I heard between 12-2 is the busiest time. Lunchtime they also serve Chuck ( yuck chuck),,, A 350 gram ribeye is about $28,, most people order 300 grams. Except for the wait outside, it is a nice filling, tasty quick meal. Attached some bad pictures,,,, the steak I had already started so excuse the bite taken out of it and the wasabi on it lol.
