Does anyone out there have a good way of identifying another chowhound? I had the most exasperating experience last weekend-- I ended up at a party in Cliffside, NJ, and a bunch of us decided to leave to get a late dinner. I *knew* there was a great Turkish place in the area (from these boards, natch), so I asked around. (I was thinking of Kervan, by the way.)
Almost no one had heard of the place, and those who had couldn't remember its name or where it was located. So I thought I would find someone, anyone with a nose for food and ask them for a recommendation. I ended up at an mediocre, expensive Persian place (Laxex, I think it was called-- it was near Fort Lee). So frustrating, especially when you KNOW there's something delicious nearby!
So, if you're at a party in an unfamiliar area and you don't know anyone there very well, how do you decide whose recommendations to trust?
