Ichiban Buffet in El Monte is a paradise for senior citizens

Chandavkl | Dec 4, 201412:34 PM     3

Somehow I missed this opening last year, right by the Longo dealerships on Peck Road. Yes, another Chinese buffet with a Japanese name. (I'm guessing they do that to emphasize the sushi choices to non-Asian diners.) Weekday lunch is $6.99, dinner $10.99 with senior discount, a dollar cheaper than regular prices. (Printed prices are $1 higher, but paper sign in window has new prices, indicating a recent price cut.) All the stuff you expect to see at a Chinese buffet, but a bunch of stuff you usually don’t. Pig feet, beef tripe, braised chili salmon fish head, frosted peanuts (like in Kellogg sugar frosted flakes). Best item was the cheeseburger, a White Castle sized sandwich. That’s not a knock on the other food here—the burger was delicious. Did I tell you the senior lunch is $6.99? No wonder the place is packed with Asian seniors.
