Hunger Pang, on Church Avenue between Stratford Road and East 10th Street, near Coney Island Avenue, that aspires to a modern take on pan-Asian food, and it succeeds pretty well. On a recent dinner there, my wife and I got dumplings with pork, chives, and - wait for it - cheddar. It worked. But even better was their take on a burger, which I know doesn't sound very pan-Asian, but they prepare it in their own style, which turns it into one of the better burgers I've had in New York: in particular, very juicy and rich. In past visits to Hunger Pang, I've also liked their wings, which they make with a surprisingly crunchy texture and very spicy -- and good.
My one complaint about the place was the locally-distilled sake, which just wasn't very good. As much as I like to support a local Brooklyn business, I think I'll go with the imported stuff next time.
Anyway, I very much recommend Hunger Pang and would even call it a destination for this somewhat out-of-the-way 'hood.
