Hunan Home's chili sauce [San Francisco]

I visited Chinatown on a recent trip through California and ate at Hunan Home's restaurant. A serving of hot and sour soup was served with the meal, accompanied by a chili sauce of some sort. The chili sauce was smoky, salty, and spicy, but not overwhelmingly so, and just downright delicious. Since I won't have the opportunity to visit this restaurant again anytime in the foreseeable future, does anyone know how I can make this sauce at home?
