I recently had lunch with former coworkers at Hunan Bar & Restaurant restaurant in Davis. As I understand this restaurant recently had a change of owners and the menu was completely changed. Davis is an epicenter of mediocre Americanized Asian cuisine so I didn't know what to expect. I was blown away by how good it was. The food was comparable to the better Bay Area Sichuan restaurants in the Bay Area like China Village in Albany. Here is what we ate:
Mapo tofu with fish. The quality of Mapo tofu is a sign of how authentic a Sichuan restaurant is. This version was excellent. Spicy and deeply flavored with pieces of tender fish.
We order a claypot mushroom dish that was similar to what is called Tea tree mushrooms at other Sichuan restaurants. This was also excellent. Full of flavor with really good wok char.
We ordered a bamboo shoot stirfry that was good
My friends ordered a tripe dish which they enjoyed but I didn't try.
Overall, I was very impressed with the food here.
