Hummus Bar and Grill in Tarzana

Short reminder review since they've been mentioned here a few times but not lately. Went there last night, about 6 p.m. and they were already filling up. We had no reservations but were more than happy to sit at the bar. Service was excellent, the hostess and the waitress were very apologetic in pointing out that even though there were empty tables they were being held for reservations. That kind of stuff doesn't bother us but it was a good example of their awareness level for customers.

The place is definitely loud and not a quiet fine dining type of atmosphere. Lots of help bustling about. We ordered the hummus with mushrooms as an appetizer. For entree we got the sweetbread and Romanian kebab. As have been mentioned, upon being seated they immediately give you the flatbread, some pickles and cabbage. Flat bread was great Hummus was smooth and creamy, the mushrooms went great with it.

We love organ meats and I was immediately intrigued by a sweetbreads skewer. It was amusing to see the waitress trying to politely ask if we were familiar with sweetbreads and knew what it was. After reassuring her enthusiastically they took the order quickly. The rest of the time, the bartender or another waitress would regularly check up on us. A second flatbread was delivered when there was only a quarter left of the first one.

The sweetbread was grilled perfectly. Crisp on the outside, soft tender fluffy on the inside. I had gotten two skewers, 4-5 big pieces on each skewer, out of that, only one piece had a small gristly vein. Overall very good dish and I'm fascinated by the fact they have a foie gras skewer, I want to get that next time.

The Romanian kebab came as three 4-5 inch length pieces about the size of dice. Juicy, well grilled. It was supposed to be spicy but my low spicy tolerance wife didn't find it spicy at all. Instead she thought it was well balanced flavors.

We loved the place. I can see where some people might not care for how loud and crowded the place would be. But we found the service very attentive. Great quality food at very fair prices. If it weren't for the holiday coming up, we would have ordered a ton of food as is our norm at new places and taken leftovers home. The rest of the menu looks very intriguing.
