Hula Grill in San Mateo

Peter Yee | Jun 14, 200504:22 PM

Figaro's in the Laurelwood Shopping Center has closed in San Mateo, and was quickly replaced by the Hula Grill, a Hawaiian restaurant obviously. They opened last Friday from what I can tell.

The place serves a variety of pupus, salads, as well as grilled meats (either as a traditional plate lunch with rice and macaroni salad, or as sandwiches).

I tried the Ka'anapali combo which combines the teriyaki steak and kalua pig(!) with 2 scoops of rice and a scoop of the macaroni salad. The steak was nicely grilled a la minute (which explains why it took awhile for my food to show up), but I found the teriyaki sauce to be odd tasting, almost metallic. The kalua pork, on the other hand, was delightful, soft, smokey, salty, and served without any annoying cabbage (woohoo!). Can't say much about the macaroni salad -- it was pretty generic.

Other tiems on the menu include fried calamari, mandarin orange/coconut salad, mahi mahi macadamia sandiwch, loco moco (as a sandwich!?), ahi tuna teriyaki, and a vegetarian option (tofu or Boca Burgers as a meat substitute).

They have a selection of beers (with so many Italian beers, I have to think they came from Figaro's selection), wine, and sodas.

For me it's convenient Hawaiian without the drive to Half Moon Bay or back home to Mountain View.
