When I moved to L.A. two years ago, I bought one of the "Hungry?" guide books to give me an overview of cheap eats all over town. I've slowly worked my way through most of it, and was "fortunate" enough to be on the 405 heading north when hunger struck and I realized I could cross another one off the list.
Howard's Famous Bacon & Avocado Burgers is at 11127 Venice Blvd. at Sepulveda, in a strip mall. Open Mon - Sat. 10-8. It's been there since 1971, has an A rating, and as far as burgers go, served up one of my faves to date. This isn't a fancy burger by any stretch. I ordered the house special with is a 1/4 lb patty with lettuce, tomato, avocado, and bacon on an average bun. The cost? A mere $4.45!! The patty had that great flavor only possible from an old and well used grill. The tomato slices were generous, fresh and actually tasted like tomato! Best of all, of course, were the thick slices of avocado, at peak ripeness. A larger patty might give you a juicier burger, and I think I'll add cheese to my next one, but it's definitely worth the drive West next time I have a craving.
The fries were fine, fresh and crisp. They serve fountain Coke products, and they also offer a selection of sandwiches and tacos, as well as Garden Burger patties.
