I had to drive to Sacto this weekend and decided that it was the appropriate time to check out House of Soul in Vallejo. House of Soul has gotten some mentions on this board over time, and it's conveniently located a few blocks from 80 if you take the Solano Ave/Spring St. exit. I wouldn't say that it's an ideal SF-Sacto/Tahoe stop though b/c the service can really lag there depending on how busy they are.
That being said, I found the greens to be the best I've had, I haven't tried all that many versions, but they were slightly vinegary, salty, porky, and tasty. They're texture was better too, not too fibrous. I also had the rice and gravy and fried chicken. The chicken was good, not the best in the world or anything, but it was freshly fried and juicy.
$9.66 (incld. tax @ lunch)) for 4 pieces of chicken, 2 sides, and a piece of cornbread, a great value considering that it was more than enough for 2 meals for me. I haven't tried Nellie's yet, so I can't compare them, but it seems like they both might have slow (casual, homestyle) service issues. If you're not in a hurry and in the area, I would recommend it. Cash only.
