We were in Pittsfield a few week ago, and at the insistence of a friend we were with, who had a strong craving, we went to a deserted downtown India restauratnt called, imaginatively, House of India. The food was very good, though the appetizers and the read better than the mains.
The standouts were a large nan topped with almonds, paneer pakoras (fresh cheese, filled with cilantro, chili and garlic, dipped in chickpea flour batter and fried); and dahi poori (homemade lentil crackers with chick peas and potatoes, topped with youghurt and tamarind). Curiously, these were are the same highlight dishes at the House of India in Worcester (see posting link below), and it turns out they the restauratnts are affiliated, owned by a nephew and uncle. The family is Punjabi, which would probably explain the wonderful cheese pakora (eat it while it is hot!!). Both places are definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in Pittsfield of Worcester.
