Question

I get together with a group of friends about once a month to try a new restaurant, and based on the "best thing I ate in Feb 2014" thread, we are trying House of Gourmet tomorrow. I plan to order the lamb brisket hot pot, but was wondering if anyone else felt inclined to weigh in on some of their favourite dishes.

I prefer their rice dishes over noodles.
BBQ offerings are solid.

I like their:
Pork and Century Egg Congee
"Three treasure" (bbq duck, chicken, roast pork) on rice
Beef Tendon over Stewed Noodle

Is "thick soup" on the menu the english translation for congee? if so, does anyone have a recommendation for a good congee here?

Also - I see a few meat items with "honey walnut" - is this an authentic Chinese dish or an American-Chinese evolution? I'd order it if it were good, one way or the other, but I am just curious.

That was me who posted about the lamb brisket hot pot. Just note that the dish really hinges on liking or not liking fermented tofu. It's a very pungent taste. It's served on the side so you can control the amount. But without it the dish would be ordinary.

So if there's any risk that your dining companions may not be into such a strong taste, then any of the other hot pot items are very good too. Someone else mentioned the oyster one is good, and I agree. The roast pork with seafood or the beef brisket are classic.

I have only been to H of G once, about two years ago, but I liked it and would go back. The best and most popular dishes seemed to be Roast Pork and BBQ Duck. Plates of these were flying out of the kitchen and disappearing quickly. Good snow pea pods too. I tried an oyster dish but did not care for it. Maybe it was the sauce.

If any of you come to Buffalo, I recommend Miss Hot Cafe in the northern suburb of Amherst, on Sheridan Drive a couple blocks East of Niagara Falls Blvd. They have a huge selection with lots of authentic favorites and I have never had anything I didn't like. Their braised pork, served with bok choy and a boiled egg, is especially good (just be aware that they close for an hour between lunch and dinner, and are closed on Mondays). Also near there on Maple Road is Red Pepper, my favorite Vietnamese place. Excellent Beef Pho, roast pork with rice noodles, shrimp spring roll. Cheers, Canadian friends!
