House of Fortune – Chinese Menu: Dinner for 8 to 12 (long)

Maomi | Mar 15, 2004 11:14 AM

Found the Chowhound from the Tribune and been enjoying reading the posts ever since! One of the posts was about the “secret Chinese menus or deals” in the Chinese restaurants in town. And I happen to have a copy of House of Fortune’s advertisement about their “Chinese banquet-style family dinner” at home. So here it is.

What I do is just literally translate the menu from Chinese to English. I am not a native English speaker but I will try my best. As of the details you will have to call to inquire (such as the contents of the appetizers, choice of soup, substitute possibility, the kind of fish used, what’s the bird’s nest made from – taro root or fried noodles, etc.).

House of Fortune, compared to others like LTH or Ed’s, has a more western approach in their dishes and ambiance. Generally, the majority of customers there are non-Asians during lunch hour as well. But what I like about House of Fortune is the consistency of quality in ingredients and food preparation.

Also, a side note about their Lunch Specials (Mon – Sat 1130 a.m. to 3 p.m.):

There is also a Chinese Menu for Lunch Specials with no English translations on it. At present time I do not have a copy of it so I cannot list all of the dishes. But personally I always ordered the following:

* Thinly Sliced Beef Short Ribs in Black Pepper Sauce -- HeiJiao NiuZaiGu
(HeiJiao = Black Pepper; NiuZaiGu = Beef Short Ribs)

* Seafood and Pineapple Fried Rice -- HaiXian BoLuo ChaoFan
(HaiXian = Seafood; BoLuo = Pineapple; ChaoFan = Fried Rice)

The quality of the Black Pepper Short Ribs has been rather consistent so far, and goes heavenly with simple steamed rice. The Seafood/ Pineapple Fried Rice, on the other hand, is not really that impressive but still a refreshing choice compared to other heavily corn-starched dishes in brown sauce.
