Went to H of D in Hicksville after reading the positive comments here. I'm familiar with the usual tikka masala/vindaloo meat dishes at Indian restaurants, so I was somewhat leery when I saw that it was vegetarian, but I was up for a new experience, so in we went.

First impression: clean, but florescent-bright (never conducive to a comfortable dinner setting). Reminded me of the typical Chinese take-out place, but with tables. The aroma of the place was not familiar to me, and it I did not find it pleasant at first. I'm not sure if it was from the food, or what, but it ws less-noticable after a few minutes.

We were greeted nicely and promptly attended to. I told our waiter that we had never been here before and we would rely on his suggestions. He was most friendly and accommodating, and took into account our young daughter, who doesn't like spicy food.

The pakoras were awesome. Greasy, but awesome.
We had the coconut rice (watch out for the very hard, crunchy seed things, you could break a tooth!) It was delicious. We had the Onion & tomato Uppatham (excellent), House special masala Dosa w/ spinach & potato (v. good), another potato & onion dosa ( v. good), and another that I forget, but which was very good, too. We were pleased with all that he brought us. Then he brought us a number of desserts which we loved: gulab jaman, a carrot & Honey & ice cream dessert, a cottage cheese & rose-flavored milk dessert, and a mango shake!
They were all great!
We will be back again soon. Thanks to Chowhound for pointing us to another delightful place!
