We went there the other night, in search of some good fried chicken. I called ahead to be sure they had it every day, since they are a "daily special" type of place. She said they served it daily, but call about 30 minutes ahead of time, since they make it fresh. So that's what we did. I wanted to order from the menu, but my DH pre-ordered 2 breast and 2 wings. When we got there it was pretty dead, but you could tell the customers were regulars. While we were eating the place was filling up. Lots of old timers there. I ordered fried chicken livers, and wanted them slightly undercooked (a bit pink in the middle). Well, that didn't happen, so I sent them back. The second order was only mildly better, but no pink to be seen. The waitress muttered something about safety issues . . . BS! If I can get them that way at Hartz's, why not here? I was also disappointed that I could only get fries with that. But the fries were pretty good. My side salad was just lettuce and shredded carrots, but the ranch dressing was one of the best I have ever had in a restaurant. The meals came with a bit of lettuce, slice of tomato and a couple pickles, so I added the tomato to the salad. The rolls were yeast rolls, but I think they were a bit old. Had a good flavor, but tough.
Now, onto the fried chicken. My DH loves Barbeque Inn's chicken, which has a thick crunchy coating that tastes salty, but no other flavor. This chicken had very crispy skin, but not much breading. It wasn't salty, or seasoned. I really liked the crispy skin, although the breast were a tad dry. He didn't like it at all. He didn't like the sides offered, either, but he is very picky and anti-vegetable, so . . . instead he ordered a side of banana pudding for me. It didn't come out with the meal, so I assumed (silly me) that it would come towards the end of the meal. After we asked for some to-go boxes, I asked about the pudding and she told me they were out, and that is why she asked me to choose something else. Well, she never did that. She offered something else, but I declined.
All in all it was disappointing. Our waitress looked very tired and seemed uninterested. All of the others were much perkier and moved a lot faster, so I think that was a problem. Add to that the fact that my DH was pretty much put out because we went somewhere he had never been to, and that made it unpleasant. But the menu is so varied and good old down home food, so I will try it again. I have had their chicken and dumplings before, which is a daily special, but never had looked at the menu. I just have to find a new dining companion, go earlier, and sit in a different section!
So I am still looking for fried chicken that satisfies both of us, without making it at home!
