non-hotel Breakfast near Murray Hill?

Coming into town from LA in a couple of weeks; spouse has already booked us (15 old Chow-Pup in tow) into the "Eastgate Tower" which I gather is mid-east side around about Murray Hill.

First issue: I HATE eating breakfast in hotels; other than one each at the Ahwanee Hotel in Yosemite National Park, and the Essex House, I've never had a hotel breakfast I really thought was worth the price.

Anywhere roughly walking distance, or a subway stop away, that has decent breakfast at a reasonable $$$$?

I'm thinking, specifically, cooked food and sit-down, even at a counter, rather than a bakery-cafe place, and I'm thinking American/West European as opposed to, e.g., Chinese or Japanese or Egyptian breakfast food. a diner would be OK if it was good.
