Hotel Avila La Fonda | Avila Beach (SLOCo)

Melanie Wong | Dec 28, 201701:28 PM

In June I had an overnight at the Hotel Avila La Fonda. I booked a same-day stay via https://www.hoteltonight.com/ for $150 for a "Great Room" with a full kitchen and whirlpool spa discounted from a rack rate of $300. This hotel is known for the food perks. It's true, complimentary snacks abound here.

I checked in before 6pm, just in time for the wine reception. A glass of local Viognier was better than the usual pour at these kind of things and I had some cheese and salumi. I returned for the 8pm pie social featuring ice cream and warm Avila Valley Barn fruit pies. I had a taste of all four types: apple, peach, apricot and peach/blueberry. Nice crust and plenty of fruit, good job. The hotel buys them frozen, defrosts for a couple hours, then bakes on site. In the morning, the hallways smell like fresh baked butter croissants to lure you into the breakfast room. The croissants were not that great, but I liked having Peet's coffee, hot chocolate, organic OJ and fresh fruit to bring back to my room for breakfast while I packed. To coax me out before the Noon check out time, a knock on the door announced that nacho bar was now open. It's a good incentive to vacate the room and enjoy them with a complimentary Mexican Coke or Corona.

The room was stocked with beverages and a big basket of (Costco) snacks, as well as two stemless wine glasses, and a note to feel free to take it all home. And should one still feel peckish in the middle of the night, there's a plate of fresh chocolate chip cookies in the lounge.

Besides the food amenities, I was allowed to leave my car in the covered parking garage until 3pm when the next guests would check-in. The unmarked restroom in the lobby was pointed out to me for post-check out use. With these thoughtful features and noon check-out deadline, I had no need to ask for a late check-out after more time at the beach, which is a block away.

The staff at Avila La Fonda are extremely friendly and helpful. There's no ocean view or pool, but I did not miss them. The room was a bit dark and had some street noise, yet I'd stay here again gladly.
