We really enjoyed dinner at Hot Tomatoe Wine Bar. It's on Federal Hwy, south of Hillsboro. Very good Italian food, even the house wines were good and a great selection of them too (not just 1 red and 1 white!). We ordered 2 different house wines by the glass to pair with our courses (@ $7 per glass, it's a very good deal and they were good!). They had quite a few from which to choose. We also had another nice red wine from the regular wine list, it was $12.
We had the mussels in red sauce appetizer (huge! share it between two people), grouper francese, and veal saltimboca. The homemade fresh rigatoni was fantastic and was served in the sauce that was in the dish we ordered, not a ladle of marinara. I really liked it that way. Our entrees were specials and priced at $22 - $24 I believe. The huge mussels app was $14. Most of the entrees on the menu were $16 - $19 - I think that's very reasonable.
The bread with garlic basil olive oil and the tartufo dessert were excellent. They were quite busy and our server forgot our salads (entrees are not a la carte). The owner, Elsa, bought us a dessert and two glasses of prosecco to make up for that. That was so thoughtful and we were happy.
It's casual, warm, friendly, not a snotty trendy place, but a nice family type restaurant with a wine bar sophistication. The singer on Saturday night was fun, kind of like your Uncle Leo who can sing Sinatra. I really had a nice time and look forward to going back to try the many other dishes they offer.
Elsa is a great host and chef :)
