So who wins the "Battle of the Hot Samsas" on 108th Street (Forest Hills/Rego Park)??
The interminable wait for the Q23 bus forced my cold hands and face into both SALUTE & BEAUTIFUL BUKHARA for a quick and temperature-raising bite.
The contest shapes up as follows: SALUTE's samsa had a beefy, sweet & oniony flavor with a pronounced sauciness, held together by some light phyllo. While the Q23's usual headway is about 10 minutes during the rush hour, Salute's samsa was tossed into the oven and apparently reheated (and for a long time at that - no bus passed by)...carnivores in their seats were enjoying assorted skewers of lamb cuts and livers..."to go" @ $1.50, this warmed the innards.
(Taking a cue from a recent poster, I stopped in to MONYA & MISHA's Russian store...need more time there.)
Not having enough of a good thing, I headed across 108th to BEAUTIFUL BUKHARA, for Samsa #2...costs a quarter more (recent price rise), but the heavier, fresh 'n' flaky phyllo covering rich lamb-y chunks and intense onion with flavors of caraway (and perhaps cilantro?) was my battle winner!...not to mention that from order given to order filled, the elapsed time was just under 45 seconds!!...and the "to-go" bag also included a pair of spicy tomato sauce cups.
The wind blew. The bus came.
