595 Hungerford Dr
Rockville, MD 20850
This spot is located in the shopping center with the Giant at the north end of the Rockville Town Center area. While Urban Hotpot is the current darling of hot pots, I think Legend is in the same category if not superior.
The big feature at legend is the cold bar with a wide array of self-serve vegetables, meatballs, sausage items, tofu etc. Unlike Urban, you neither have to wait for the items to come around or order on an i-pad. Also, the service is more interactive at Legend. Pricing at lunch is a little better, with the hot pot being $17.99.
Strengths: the broths are quite good, especially the pickled mustard green broth (only if you like sour flavors,) the spicy and the herbal. Far superior to Urban although not as food as little sheep on the herbal. Sauce Bar is well stocked with traditional & non- items. Miso, teriyaki and Thai are in the latter category while fermented red tofu, chive flower, hot sauce, Chinese bbq (shacha) are in the former. The only lack is hot chile oil instead of a hot sauce. The cold selection of vegetables is noticably fresher and more attractive looking than Urban.
The quality of the meatballs and sausage items is strikingly good. Some of the tofu items are not great. The meats are good to excellent with the odd parts like tripe (2 kinds) and the fish slices being particularly good. You order the meats from your server. A wide assortment of drinks including a small selection of beer is available. For 2 or more, you can get a split pot. For one, just the small individual pot is available.
Another nice touch is a pickle bar with a daily assortment of things like seaweed salad, boiled peanuts, watermelon slices, tofu salad, cabbage pickle. On the last two visits, they also set out warm tapioca soup.
Their website appears to be down right now, but I have included the link. A very nice addition to Rockville's Chinese and Hot pot scenes.
