Hot Italian Beef At Ivy and Coney in DC

Steve | Apr 3, 201810:12 AM

Ivy and Coney on 7th street is the dive-est of dive bars. The only mystery surrounding it as you climb the rickety stairs is whether the wrecking ball will be here soon or has already come and gone.

They offer dirt cheap beer and just a few items to eat, namely chicago or coney dogs and chicago hot Italian beef sandwiches.

Twice before I've tried Italian beef sandwiches in DC, but I never got the sense I was eating anything special or different than a kind of cheesesteak without the cheese.

But one bite in, Ivy and Coney is far different from the normal sandwich. I ordered mine 'dipped', which means they dunk the entire sandwich in a beef jus. it can also be ordered dry or 'wet'.

Mine was a spicy concoction. It held together despite the wetness, and it was very satisfying and unique experience. I can see what all the fuss is about.

I've never had one in Chicago, but now I feel like I have. The sandwich was $7 including tax, and it was a hearty meal.
