Where are the best HOT DOGS???

Question

A few years ago, I heard of a place, somewhere in the Hudson Valley, that served AUTHENTIC Chicago hot dogs....with the rolls even imported from Chicago! Does anyone know if this place still exists, and if so where exactly is it?
 
More importantly...where are the very best hot dogs in New York? I live in the Binghamton area but would travel anywhere north of NYC for a good hot dog!

My favorite hot dog is served at Hot Dog Johnnie's on Route 46 in Buttzville, NJ (about an hour from the George Washington Bridge). 
The total experience is great: long lines of patient customers, a pretty setting by a winding river, the original (1940's) stand still on display, and the best buttermilk in the world, served in chilled mugs.
The hot dog itself is served on a steamed bun with chopped onion, mustard, and a pickle slice.
If you like hot dogs, don't miss it.

Only on ChowHound would I have a half dozen people answering a query about the best hot dogs in New York with locations in New Jersey!
 
If I were willing to go to New Jersey, I would just as well go to NYC or Long Island. But I've been down there and, frankly (no bun intended), I have no plans to go back!
 
Now to repeat the query - Where, ABOVE NYC, are the best hot dogs in NEW YORK???

Why not head in the other direction to Buffalo and hit Ted's? That's certainly north of NYC. They are chargrilled and come with special chili sauce if you so desire along with the regional and obligatory Loganberry as well as some good onion rings. While in the area you can also get a good beef on weck as well as some good wings.

Anybody that would even mention desiring a Chicago hot dog, doesn't have a clue about what a good hot dog is all about! No hot dog lover from the capital of the hot dog world, New Jersey, wants a salad topping a terrible Vienna Beef skinless hot dog! 
 
Marathon Industries, Thumanns, Sabrett, Best, etc. makers of natural casing hot dogs - each one is better than the other. NJ - that's where you'll find these hot dog manufacturers and not in Upstate NY.

Give Pat's Hubba Hubba a try over on Main Street (Route 1) in Port Chester. It's greasy, grilled and can be piled high with chili but, it can be a guilty delight. Open all the time except Sunday mornings.

In Rochester they have white hot dogs (white hots) and red ones (red hots). I don't really know what is in the white hots, but they're delicious. Anyone have some information, or know where to get white hots in the NYC area?

Since 1946, when I started going to NY at a regular basis, I stopped at a little stand on the junction of Rte.46 and rte 39. That was the original " Hot Dog Johnnies ". There I discovered the best Hot Dogs that I ever ate and have been eating them ever since. The traffic jams that were caused there made him move to his present location. Many improvments followed. When it is time for me to go to great beyond,I hope that there will be a "Hot Dog Johnnies " there. DW

COSTCO - for $1.50 for a bigHebrew National and a drink - best bargin PLUS, it is a good tasting hot dog. They recently changed to their own brand, but cannot tell the difference.

Heids of Liverpool, just a second north of Syraucse. Jersey sucks and smells,there is no need to go there for food, you might as well just stay in New York or go up to Central New York where Heids has Hoffmans German Franks, they are the shit !

I'm up in the Capital District, and as a former Jersey resident I have to say I miss the Jersey hot dog joints very much, but can't justify driving three hours just to satisfy my craving.

That said, in this area there's a little old-time joint called Gus'; it's in Watervliet, a couple miles north of Albany. Tiny hole in the wall (literally- if you order outside, they'll hand your food to you through a hole in the wall!) that's like taking a trip back in time to the 1940s.

Great little red dogs with or without homemade meat sauce (the dogs are still custom made locally for Gus' according to the old recipe, I'm told), classic burgers with or without nice greasy fried onions, French fries that make me think of the boardwalk and paper hats...

It's a nostalgic gem. And a really good hot dog. Just a couple of blocks off Broadway, and 90 seconds from the highway exit (Rte 787, 25th St).

Definitely my local favorite dog, especially since Emil Meister's closed and I can't get his handmade ones any more..

Ted's Hot Dogs in Buffalo (I think the one on Sheridan Dr is still in existence since they opened in 1927) has, hands down, the best hot dogs anywhere (including NYC)!!!
Second? Nathan's - which has a place in Albany if I'm not mistaken.

Nice to see this thread still open for discussion. While I have not had the pleasure of tasting a Ted's dog yet, We now buy only Hoffman's angus hotdogs at our local meat market. You can get these at many places in upstate. The angus hotdog is longer and thicker than a normal dog and the taste is the best. We have tried most every hotdog available but now only the Hoffman's angus dogs will do. You'll need an extra long (hoagie) bun to fit it into.
