hot dog fix at Casper's in Richmond

gordon wing | Apr 26, 2006 09:17 PM

All the recent hot dog talk got me in the mood so today I found myself near the Casper's near the Richmond Civic Center - McDonald Ave. Business seemed to be doing OK, it was after the lunch hour rush but there was still a moderate amount of business going on ... I decided to go for the regular Caspar Dog w/everything. $2.59 - 2.82w/tax. When you put in your order you're at a glass case so you can see all the fixings: a large bowl of yellow mustard, relish, beautiful ripe tomato half circles, half circles of raw onion and grated cheese. Since this was my first visit to a Casper's ( I was a Kaspar's guy and Top Dog ) I probably should have had a simpler dog but instead I thinned out the toppings a bit so as not to overwhelm the dog. I thinned out the raw onions mainly. The (steamed) dog hung over the ends of the also steamed bun. It had a little snap to it and a pretty meaty flavor. The soft bun showed off the dog well. This is where a preponderance of toppings can get in the way because the dog is not a 1/4 pounder or anything oversized (altho it is a bit longer) All in all, a pretty satisfying dog (of the steamed variety).
