Hot Dog Database, Bill’s Drive In, Evanston

I know VI asked us to describe the hot dog joint nearest us, but the one probably closet is perhaps the most vile place I know – I think it’s called Carlos’s gyros – across from Evanston township H.S. at Church & Dodge. Do not be fooled by the sign that mentions pambazos they don’t exist nor does any passable food.

Instead I’ll focus on Bill’s ‘cause I stopped by Sunday and it’s reasonably close. I’ve mentioned Bill’s a couple of times and I think Mike G. has as well. Bill’s has also been in a couple of documentaries about hot dog’s I’ve seen on PBS. I think because it dates back to 1949 (perhaps the oldest restaurant in Evanston) and is in a very cool old building. They use Leon’s skinless which I’m don’t really like, toppings are: mustard, relish, tomatoes, pickle, onion, celery salt, sport peppers. Buns are Rosen’s. Ketchup is not standard in the “with everything” order. They go heavy on the celery salt, which I like, and the tomatoes at least as of Sunday are pretty decent. You can also get 50’s style hamburgers from single to quad - which are pretty damn tasty with grilled and raw onions. (unlike the other toppings you have to specify grilled onions when ordering). Fries are fresh cut, with, for me, the perfect amount of salt. If the dog’s were just a little bit better I’d be there quite a bit.

Bill’s is on Western just north of Howard (Western changes to Asbury in Evanston)
