Some Like it Hot (Akbar's Santa Monica)

WLA | Dec 31, 200509:46 AM

For some reason I was in the mood for scoville heat the other night. Most restaurants seem to be afraid of making their "hot" dishes truely hot, but not, it turns out at Akbar's.

Started with an appetizer of their hot wings. Indian Buffalo wings with a gooey and somewhat charred outer layer that stains your fingers red. These are pretty good, a little less hot than what I was expecting maybe but not mild by any stretch.

If you haven't been to Akbar's before they have a little Chili Meter chart running from 1 (mild) to 5 (I think - which is their hottest entree). I went for their hottest dish on the menu, the Pepper Lamb.

My taste buds were not dissapointed as little men with blow torches ran around frying the inside of my mouth as I added raita and their little coconut chutney to my nan trying to douse the flames.

Next time I will stick with the Vindaloo which is one number down the Chili Meter.

This Akbar's is on Wilshire between 26 and 27th Streets on the north side of the street, (across from Drago I think).

Nice service, comfortable seating, fair prices and really good food.
