last nite my friends and I had dinner at the Hop Woo on corner of Main and Garfield in Alhambra, out of convenience. I don't recall which Chinese restaurant they took over. Anyway, isn't Hop Woo a local institution? I've eaten at their Chinatown location and wasn't expecting much at this new location. Well, just as I expected, not much to write home about.
For a Grand Opening restaurant, the place wasn't clean. There were toothpicks and napkins on the floor near some of the tables and the fish tanks were cloudy with the usual dead fishes & crabs in the tanks. After I caught a glimpse of the fish tanks, I told my friends, please do not order seafood tonite. Questions, 1) do they really take the seafood from the tanks or do they have cleaners tanks in the back which is where they bring out the seafood for inspection 2) why don't they at least clean out the tank once in a while?
Ok, I've rambled on enough. Basically, the chinese broccoli wasn't fresh, kung pao chicken (I know my bad on ordering but I'm a chinese person who loves KPC) didn't have any green/red peppers(only peanuts + chicken) which my mom puts in her KPC, steamed chicken was rubbery with no meat on most of the pieces, and tofu, bland. I do have to give props to the chef special beef dish, very tender beef chunks.
We learned our lesson, in an area where there's an abundance of great Chinese restaurants, we can't just settle.
No more Hop Woo for me.
