Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co. | Sacramento

Melanie Wong | Sep 1, 201609:16 PM     2

Sunday I arrived in Sacramento early enough to enjoy a solo brunch on the back patio at Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co. A pleasantly warm morning drew all the patrons to the outdoor seats in front at sidewalk tables or in the shaded back, deserting the inside seating.

To drink, I went with the nitro coffee from Chocolate Fish. I had missed out on trying it a year ago, so was very pleased that it's offered here. Very concentrated and dark flavors, the effervescence almost made the caffeine jolt hit the system faster. A little too bitter in the finish for me, making me reach for the sugar, however, the crystals would not dissolve in the ice cold fizz.

The brunch menu's pretty extensive, taking some time to study and mull over a decision. But once I read Duck Confit Hash, $15, nothing else would do. And I'd say that I chose well. Browned discs of waxy potatoes, roasted sweet pepper, fresh as can be tiny summer squash, silky leaves of rainbow chard, crisp sauteed red onion, mingled with shreds of rich duck confit. The plate was napped with a generous amount of chipotle hollandaise sauce, a pair of poached eggs, and garnished with chopped scallions. The eggs were cooked just right with fully set whites and luxuriously runny yolks. And for once, I had more than enough hollandaise sauce on my plate. My only regret was that I was eating alone, as this was too much for me to finish.

The conventional wisdom seems to be that brunch and lunch are better bets than dinner at Hook & Ladder. What else do 'hounds recommend here?
