I stumbled upon this place visiting the Dunbar-Jupitar Hammond library and have come back a couple times. So far everything for the most part has been very good. The portions are generous, the prices are low, and the service is friendly. The atmosphere is severely lacking, so I've only done take-out, which seems to be what most people do.
As far as the menu goes, it's simple: fish, chicken, and various sides, all deep fried. It's not health food, but for an indulgence this place does it as well or better than any other in the area.
The catfish is tender and sweet with crispy cornmeal breading. It's farm raised with no muddy taste. The fried okra is crispy outside, moist inside, and has a subtle spiciness to the breading that puts it a step above what you can get at most other places I've tried. The fried chicken livers are fresh and tender, and in my experience never overcooked. They also have fried gizzards if that's your thing (as well as the more mundane cuts of chicken) but I love the livers, so I haven't tried the other chicken offerings.
They have conch on the menu which I plan on trying soon. The fried oysters are a bit stronger tasting than I prefer, but that's been the only thing I've had that wasn't excellent thus far.
It's on the corner of MLK and Fountain St, just a couple blocks west of Veronica S. Shoemaker. If you're in the mood for fried seafood, I'd say it's well worth a visit.
