Does homemade sugar-syrup need to be refrigerated?

I made my own vanilla sugar syrup for my coffee. I had been using the "well-known" brand but has a lot of additives, so made my own. I used a ratio of 1 part water to 2 parts sugar, and added a split vanilla bean. I brought to boil, and then just let it cool off, bean and all.
My question is do i have to refrigerate it or can it be left on the counter?
