Homemade mayonnaise advice/recipes?

I made mayonnaise yesterday which turned out just awful - terribly oily tasting. The texture was great, it emulsified perfectly so I'm pretty sure the amount of oil wasn't the problem, but the grade of oil used (basic "salad" oil), right?

Any tips or favorite recipes for a standard mayonnaise suitable for everything from a tomato sandwich to more dish-specific herbed mayos?
