Homemade crab cake questions

Aaron D | Mar 12, 200302:00 PM

Okay, there's an ad in the Trib food section for someplace selling live blue crabs for $3.50/pound. I'm thinking about making crab cakes with these live crabs, but am unsure of the work/cost involved.

First, the place is International Club, which I suspect is affiliated with the new Food World or Food Harbor or whatever the heck it is in Addison that tony has written about. Anyone know for sure, and if buying their live blue crabs is a good bet?

It seems like you could buy the crabs, steam them, crack them open, remove the meat, and go to work. It also seems like this sounds easier than it is.

First of all, how many live crabs (in pounds) would one have to buy to get, say, a pound of meat? Can it be done as easily as it sounds? Is cooking live crabs and removing the meat just a tremendous pain in the neck and not worth it?

Any suggestions/advice is greatly appreciated.
