home made bread

Why is it that home made bread, no matter if it's by hand or machine, always goes stale after two days? What do they put in the store bought kind of bread? And where can I get some to keep my bread fresh? I know it's preservatives, but I want my bread to last longer than two days with all the effort I put in.
