We hit this new Vietnamese restaurant on Buford Hwy on Friday with friends after reading Cliff's glowing review in the Loaf a week or two ago. All that I can say is that it's likely one of the best restaurant meals, and by far the best Asian, we've had in recent memory.
The only downside, to get that out of the way, is that the setting is decent for a strip mall. But it's nothing to write home about. And there was something on the new tile floor that made it as slick as if they'd put down a coating of Crisco. We watched both servers and patrons come near wiping out the entire night.
The food and service was fabulous. Our server was really enthused to make suggestions and tell us more about the dishes. And for whatever reason, they brought a couple of comp'd appetizers, which didn't hurt.
For apps, we had a salad with apples and duck, basil rolls, and grape leaves stuffed with ground lamb and grilled. Later in the meal, they brought out some grilled chicken wings that they said hadn't been added to the menu yet. All of the dishes were very well-seasoned. Spicy but not too hot, fresh crunchy vegetables, and a balanced mix of sweet, vinegary, and spicy.
For the entrees, we had flounder over crushed rice and the "big beef." The latter being a u-grill-it setup with marinated meat, and rice papers, veggies, and stir-fried rice noodles and tobacco onions. It's been a long time since we had something similar at the now-defunct Vietnam House, but I think this was much more flavorful.
Whether it is or not (there's definitely fat in all the meat), it just feels light and healthy. Next time, we'll definitely get the whole fish entree that we saw others eating.
