Hole-in-the-wall favorites

I am looking for recommendations for people's favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurants, preferably south of 59th Street. I'd loosely define a hole-in-the-wall as a small inexpensive ethnic restaurant, whose patrons are mostly people of that ethnicity, with no attempt made to gussy up the place, and where if you REALLY thought about the cleanliness of the kitchen you might reconsider eating there.

Two of my favorites are the Puerto Rican place (whose name I cannot remember) on 52nd Street between 8th and 9th (excellent yuca and rice and beans) and Havana Chelsea (on the east side of 8th Avenue, around 18th street or so -- excellent octopus salad and mamey batidos)
